A Classic Case of Annular Pancreas and its Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha; Mun Yooi,Ooi.
Annular pancreas is a rare developmental anomaly where the head of the pancreas surrounds the second part of the duodenum like a ring. This may cause the duodenal constriction, obstruction, peptic ulcers and other complications. We saw a classic case of annular pancreas. The head of pancreas surrounded the second part of duodenum completely. However there was no narrowing of the duodenum. The case may be of importance for gastroenterologists, surgeons and radiologists.

Creatine supplementation in trained rats causes changes in myenteric neurons and intestinal wall morphometry Biocell
Franzói De Moraes,Solange Marta; Brogio,Thais Andréia; Nelisis Zanoni,Jacqueline; Vicente Umada Zapater,Mariana Cristina; Barnabé Peres,Sidney; Hernandes,Luzmarina.
Creatine is widely used by athletes as an ergogenic resource. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of creatine supplementation on the duodenum of rats submitted to physical training. The number and myenteric neuronal cell bodies as well mucosal and muscular tunic morphometry were evaluated. Control animals received a standard chow for 8 weeks, and the treated ones received the standard chow for 4 weeks and were later fed with the same chow but added with 2% creatine. Animals were divided in groups: sedentary, sedentary supplemented with creatine, trained and trained supplemented with creatine. The training consisted in treadmill running for 8 weeks. Duodenal samples were either processed for whole mount preparations or for paraffin embedding...

Density and Morphometry of Overall Myenteric Neurons Population from the Duodenum of Diabetic Rats (Rattus norvegicus) under Ascorbic Acid Supplementation International Journal of Morphology
Pereira,Marli Aparecida dos Santos; Liberati,Ana Paula; Souza,Ivan Domicio da Silva; Zanoni,Jacqueline Nelisis.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the overall myenteric neurons population from the duodenum of adult streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats supplemented with ascorbic acid (AA), a potent antioxidant. Fifteen 90-day-old rats were divided in groups: control (C), diabetic (D), diabetic treated with ascorbic acid (DA). After 120 days of experimental period duodenums were resected and processed as whole-mount preparations according to Giemsa's technique, which allowed us to evaluate neuronal density in an area of 8.96 mm² and measure the area of 500 neuronal cell bodies per group. It was observed a 32.55% reduction in neuronal density of group D when compared to group C (p<0.05). The density of spared neurons in group DA, in relation to group D, was...

Distribution of Serotonin-immunoreactive Enterochromaffin Cells in the Gastrointestinal Tract of the Least Shrew (Cryptotis parva) International Journal of Morphology
Al-Tikriti,Mohammed S; Khamas,Wael; Chebolu,Seetha; Darmani,Nissar A.
Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous systems. It is involved in a variety of physiological processes both in the gut and in the CNS. The present study examined the distribution of serotonin containing enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of a vomit competent species, the least shrew. These cells were easily recognized by their globular granules stained with the H&E and serotonin immune-positive stain. The immunoreactive enterochromaffin cells (IERCs) were mainly confined to the basal portion of the glandular epithelium and were distributed throughout the shrew stomach, small and large intestine. None was found to be associated with the mucosal epithelial lining. Moreover,...

MORPHOMETRY AND QUANTIFICATION OF THE MYENTERIC NEURONS OF THE DUODENUM OF ADULT RATS FED WITH HYPOPROTEIC CHOW International Journal of Morphology
Marçal Natali,Maria Raquel; Hubner de Miranda-Neto,Marcílio; Orsi,Antônio Marcos.
Morphometric and quantitative analyses were carried out on the myenteric neurons of the duodenum, to study possible alterations resulting from a supply of low-protein level chow to adult Wistar rats. The animals were divided in two groups: nourished (N) fed with ration containing 22% protein for 210 days and the undernourished (D) fed with ration containing 8% protein from the 90th day of age on and during the next 120 days. Whole-mounts were stainedby the method of Giemsa and the histochemical reaction of NADH-diaphorase enzyme, to estimate the neuronal population, which revealed a greater neuronal density in undernourished rats, regardless of the technique employed. The morphometric studies of the cell body profiles of 500 neurons of each group indicated...

Multiple Vascular Anomalies in the Abdomen: A Gross Anatomical Study International Journal of Morphology
Jacob,Tony; Modgil,Vishal; Rana,Kum Kum; Das,Srijit.
Knowledge of the branching pattern of the abdominal aorta is clinically important for any abdominal surgeon operating on parts of the gut or neighboring structures like the suprarenals, spleen, pancreas, liver, kidneys and uréter. The presence of abnormal inferior phrenic artery associated with aberrant branch from the celiac trunk supplying the pancreas and duodenum is a rare anomaly. In the present case, we observed four branches of the celiac artery i.e. (a) left gastric artery (b) common hepatic artery (c) splenic artery and (d) an aberrant branch, which took a course inferiorly towards the pancreas. The aberrant artery supplied the body of the pancreas and gave a branch which supplied the horizontal part of the duodenum and then entered the transverse...

Polysplenia syndrome with duodenal and pancreatic dysplasia in a Holstein calf : A case report OAK
Kondoh, Daisuke; Kawano, Tomomi; Kikuchi, Tomoaki; Hatate, Kaoru; Watanabe, Kenichi; Sasaki, Motoki; Yamagishi, Norio; Inokuma, Hisashi; Kitamura, Nobuo.
Background: Laterality disorders of the abdominal organs include situs inversus totalis that mirrors the arrangements of all internal organs and heterotaxy syndrome (situs ambiguus) in which the thoracic or abdominal organs are abnormally arranged. Heterotaxy is often accompanied by multiple congenital malformations, and it generally comprises asplenia and polysplenia syndromes. To our knowledge, polysplenia syndrome has been reported in only three cattle, and computerized tomographic (CT) images of these animals were not obtained. Case presentation: A six-month-old Holstein heifer had ruminal tympani and right abdominal distension. CT imaging showed that the rumen occupied the right side of the abdominal cavity, the omasum and abomasum occupied the left...

Quantitative Study of Brunner's Glands in the Human Duodenal Submucosa International Journal of Morphology
Marcondes Macéa,Maria Inez; Macéa,José Rafael; Tavares Guerreiro Fregnani,José Humberto.
The existence of Brunner's glands (BGs) in the duodenal submucosa is uncontestable, but their exact distribution along the full extent of the duodenal wall is unknown. Objective: To verify the BGs distribution along the human duodenum. Material and method: Twenty normal duodenums were examined. Two samples were removed from each of the four anatomical portions of the duodenum using a scalpel, in such a way that the whole circumference of each portion was excised. Sections were prepared and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Twelve microscope fields were examined on each duodenal section. The mean numbers of glandular points per field were computed and compared, for the 12 microscope fields of each duodenal section examined. Results: The first duodenal portion...
